Ærø Internationale Maskefestival

Aeroe International Maskfestival juni 2011

Masks in the streets

Our vision is to let Aeroe be invaded by a strange crowd of new people: The mask-people
We  will meet them everywhere in the  three main towns Marstal, Aeroeskoebing and Soeby.
They will seem to have swarmed out from cracks and caves to settle down among all of us living on or visiting Aeroe. From dawn til dusk, even at night in the dark they appear as if they have always been here.
Whether we like it or not, we cannot avoid them

Maybe they feel like a trip to the beautiful villages on Aeroe?
Maybe they  want to dip their toes in the ocean surrounding us?
We might see them dancing on top of the island, og watch row the boats at sea.

They go shopping, they sit on the benches, they stand in the showcases of shops here and there. They pay unexpected visits all over town – even at the townhall. They meddle and mingle, they delight us and provoke us. While disturbing us, amusing us, enriching us they question everything and us. Some of them are strange wandering works of art nobody understands. Others are paralysed  but living sculptures, who only move when and if they want to. Some might be clowns and so sweet and lovable, others grotesque  and a bit scary. Maybe some walk on stylts?

We will meet the traditional talking Aeroe masks and the ones that recently moved to the island – those who are dumb and colorful fantasymasks . We will meet commedia dell arte and other masks from the mainland and abroad. We will be amazed and enchanted by the giants in the distance, that sway and flounce and wave at us and fight with eternal winds of Aeroe.

Everyone is wellcome to join the maskpeople of Aeroe during the festival. Bring your masks and costumes and lets discover the wonders of masks living in the streets together. Regard this as an invitation. All we need is to know who you are, how many you will be and what kind of masks you will be using. Please send us photos if available.

We cannot offer you a fee. But we are working hard to arrange free though primitive accomodation for all masks - and we promise there will be cheap meals to get at certain meeting places. The meeting places will function as networking spots where new friends and colleagues will share their love of masks, tell their stories and pour from their well of experiences.
We look forward to meet you.
